Teeth Whitening
What Is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening or more specifically teeth bleaching is a way of cleaning the outer layer of teeth of organic matter from food and drink. It is this food and drink debris that results in teeth becoming discoloured, or more yellow, over time.
Whilst brushing and visits to the dental hygienist can eliminate most of the surface staining, this deeper staining inside the enamel requires direct application of products.
The most effective product for this is called hydrogen peroxide/carbamide peroxide, which works by breaking down organic matter and thus removing staining.
What Will Happen During Tx?
A consultation is required to assess if your teeth are suitable for whitening. If they are, impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory. Using moulds from these impressions, custom made trays are constructed. The trays are returned to the dentist to be sterilised and then supplied, along with the bleach, to you and instructions on how to use them.
How Quickly Will I Notice Results?
This can vary from person to person and also depends on how white you wish your teeth to be. Typically, most people notice brightening within a week.
How Long Will the Treatment Last?
This is lifestyle dependant. If you drink lots of tea, coffee and red wine or smoke, then results will last for a shorter period.
We always advise of the need for maintenance, a little bit like maintaining a suntan, so you would need to wear the trays maybe two or three times a month. They can also be used a few days before a night out or other social occasion.
Is It Safe?
Provided that treatment is provided by a dentist, then yes, it is generally a very safe procedure.
Are There Side Effects?
Occasional sensitivity to temperature.
Post Tx Care?
Aftercare of trays is needed which is discussed at your consultation/treatment appointments as well as advise on how to manage any potential sensitivity.
Any other advice?
We would strongly recommend you have a check-up with your own registered dentist in the last six months. Although we will undertake an oral examination to make sure your suitable.
Did you know it is now a criminal offence for anyone other than a dentist to offer any form of direct teeth whitening, regardless of the product used.
